Ill Manors broadcast platform: trailer analysis

1) The typical codes and conventions of a film trailer consist of:

Actor/director names, studio production company - Institutional info
Title of the film (at the end), tagline, release date
Narrative
Action sequences, dramatic moments
Voiceover/text on screen/dialogue - establishment of narrative/characters
Music, non-diegetic sound
Promotional information/social media
Characters
Review quotes

2) Trailers in today's society are often distributed through forms of social media whereas in the past they would have been shown in cinemas only. Social networks such as youtube or IMDB are often used to view the trailer and websites such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram are used to promote them.

3) The iLL Manors trailer uses several trailer conventions to fit the typical conventions of a trailer. For example, the basic institutional information such as the studio production company and the directors name are present. The use of action sequences and dramatic moments creates the drama and tension that the trailer is trying to convey which is common in trailers. The use of review quotes helps to create interest in the film as good reviews indicate that the film may actually be good. The use of promotional information such as social media is also becoming a trailer convention in this current day and age and this has been used to raise awareness of the film.

4) I believe it would be aimed at 15-25 year olds primarily because the storyline can be relatable to teens i.e. the conflicts that take place and hardship of growing up in certain estates. The trailer has been presented in a way that gives brief information about each character, which can be appealing to the audience as they will want to find out more about the narrative. The main stars are visible in the trailer however, in the way the narrative is presented it suggests that Kirby and Chris will be acting as the central protagonists of the film.

5)The genre of the film has been represented through several factors such as the characters and setting. For example, through the setting the audience can understand that the film is set in the suburbs of London through the numerous shots that are used. By using these shots the audience will realise that it is a social realism film as the council estates have the connotations of deprivation and crime. Through the characters the audience can understand that there is a sense of dysfuction within their lives. For example, shots of Chris holding a gun to Jake's head suggest that within the film there is a constant theme of dysfunction and chaos and that crime is part of their lives.
